Search happens in more places than Google.

People look for businesses in search engines, AI assistants, YouTube, TikTok, Reddit, maps and marketplaces. Each one decides what to show in its own way. This page collects what each platform has actually said about how it works, in its own documentation, with links, so you're not working from guesses.

Search engines

The classic results pages, and everything Google and Bing now put around the ten blue links.

AI assistants

Answers instead of links. They search, read a few pages, then decide who gets mentioned.

Video and social

Where people search to see it first: how-tos, reviews and people they already follow.

Communities

Real people answering real questions, and a source search engines and AI assistants now pull from.

RedditQuoraForums
  1. Since 2024 Google has had access to Reddit's Data API, which it describes as real-time, structured content from Reddit.

## What works everywhere

Three things that pay off on every surface

Be readable without help

Crawlers that don't run JavaScript and stores that read listing fields literally. Say what you do, for whom and where, in plain text near the top.

Be mentioned where they look

Lists, reviews, forums and directories feed maps, AI answers and the "best" searches. Being on the pages that rank counts more than saying it yourself.

Measure to revenue

Every platform reports its own vanity numbers. Follow enquiries through to money so you know which surface actually pays.
